TP4: Future Continuoous and Future Perfect
Upper Intermediate level

Materials

Abc Google Forms (Controlled Practice)
Abc Google Slides Presentation

Main Aims

  • To review and practice future continuous and future perfect forms.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To encourage Ss to use these future forms in the context of setting goals and making predictions.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss will be presented with two images: one of a man in a suit planning and charting, the other of a woman hiking through a landscape. T will ask Ss to describe the images, and how they may relate to the idea of setting goals for the future. T will emphasize the different approaches to setting goals represented by each image. Then, T will display the following question: "Which of these two pictures do you identify with the most?" Ss will openly discuss the question.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T presents Ss with a text about a fictional e-sports player by the name of Eusebio. In this written text, Eusebio outlines his goals for becoming the best Mario Kart player to have ever lived, employing the future continuous and future perfect on multiple occasions. T will ask a student to read the text out loud. Then, Ss will have 3 minutes to read the text on their own, and "underline the parts where Eusebio expresses a specific goal or plan for the future." If class is conducted online, T will copy and paste a version of the text to the chat which Ss can use to underline. After the 3 minutes are up, Ss will join breakout rooms to compare their notes.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

After text has been discussed by the T and the Ss, T will clarify MFP for the following sentences: (For the future continuous) “In five months, I will be competing against the best players in the world.” “From here to February, I will be training eight hours a day.” (For the future perfect) “By the end of training, I will have mastered the game.” “Once I beat all my opponents [...] I will have accomplished my life’s goal.” T will go through the grammar breakdown of the structure for each tense, along with a review of pronunciation for certain words in the examples. Future Continuous: Subject + will + be + -ing Used to talk about an action in progress at a certain time OR during a period of time in the future. Future Perfect: Subject + will + have + past participle Used to talk about actions completed before a certain time in the future.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T will hand out/send a link to five exercises. Ss will have to choose the correct option of tense for each sentence. (Ex: Don't call me at 2 PM, since I will be studying / will have studied for my exam between 12 PM and 4 PM.) After 4 minutes, Ss will join a partner for peer feedback. Once the 4 minutes are up, T move on to OCFB.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T presents the following instructions: Think about your goals and plans for the New Year. Write down TWO GOALS related to family, learning, travel, or anything else. Example: I want to become fluent in german. For each goal, write down HOW you intend to achieve that goal (future continuous) along with a hopeful prediction (future perfect): a) Next year, I will be taking German classes once a week. b) By the end of the year, I will have become fluent in German. T will give Ss 6 minutes to write down their goals and sentences. Then, they will share these with the classroom.
