Description

In this lesson the students will learn about" must'' and ''have/has to" sentences through a text which is about necessity of learning a foreign language in America. It will be followed by a speaking task about students' duties and obligations in their real lives and students express some prohibition in the society or public places.

Main Aims

  • To provide accuracy conversation in the context of students' obligations and duties in their real lives.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I begin to talk about my family rules and values. I mention some rules in my family about respect,household chores and responsibilities by using Must and Have/Has to.

Exposure (2-3 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

In this section I ask my students to talk about obligations and necessities in school,society,family and public places.

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

First step I will write some sentence with "must"on the board.In this stage I can use students' wrong sentences they said so I ask students to help me correct them.Second step I will write some sentences with "have/has to" chosen from my own sentences or students' sentences

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will start eliciting the meaning by explain that "must" means"want" but "must not" means "prohibit" and "have/has to" says ''a rule'' but "don't/doesn't have to" says'' something unnecessary''.I also write the negative and question forms of them on the board.I will elicit the form of them by students' help.Using colorful markers is so beneficial to clarify the form and make it more interesting.The intonation and pronunciation will be focused on.At last I give my students handout about difference between "must" and "have/has to".

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The students should exercise on page 140 individually in 2 minutes and then they have 2 minutes to check in groups. I will ask them to share their answers with whole class.The process of checking with the whole class may last 2 minutes.

Free Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I show some pictures of signs and notices then I give them 7 minutes to talk about them and challenge themselves in their groups.
