Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of reported or indirect speech in the context of report what their classmates said about themselves.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking and listening practice in the context of what they say about themselves in past or present tenses.Students should listen to their classmates carefully so they can report what they said.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I start to talk about what my mother told me yesterday and I report it to my students .l use past reporting verbs “said”and “told”.

Exposure (2-3 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I want a few students to say one sentence about something annoying that their mothers told them ,then her classmate who is volunteer should report what she said.It should not take more than 3 minutes.

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will write some examples of reported or indirect speech on the board. I will choose from my students sentences and I ask them change it into reporting speech .If some of them have made some wrong sentences I will write the correct form on the board.

Clarification (7-9 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I cover the meaning of indirect speech by saying the difference between say and tell. When people talk about something and someone hear it and report it to another person, this process is said indirect speech. I want them to write handouts about changes that occur when the reporting verb is past. For example simple past changes into past perfect or simple present changes to simple past… I teach them stress and intonation and listen to the way the students are saying.

Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The students are going to the exercise on page 149 individually and then going to check in groups . The answers will be checked with the whole class at the end. It should not take more than 5 minutes.

Free Practice (2-3 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will ask my students to work in pairs to talk about the last time they saw their best friend then report what he or she said. They should change pronouns and possessive adjectives and tense when they want to report.
