  • to enable students to develop their reading skills for gist in the context of a funny story about birds

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students.

(slide 2) Start the lesson by asking students some questions. - " Do you watch funny videos on YouTube/TikTok? What was the last video about?" Tell students that you're going to show them a funny video and the idea of the video will be connected with one of the proverbs. Ask students if they know what a proverb is. Show them 3 proverbs, give them 1 minute and ask to match them with their meanings. (slide 3) Check together. - "Guys, we're going to watch one funny video and the main idea/sense of the video is connected with one proverb. Do you know what a proverb is? It is a famous phrase or sentence that gives you advice. Let's look at 3 proverbs and match them with their meanings. You have 1 minute to do it individually. Ok, let's check together. (slide 4)"

Exposure (2-4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Play the video. (slide 5) Show students the summary of the video and the same proverbs (slide 6 and 8) and ask them to work individually and to choose a proverb that best represents the idea of the video and ask why they think so. Ask them to use the chat for their answers. Pre-teach "a feather" and "to peck" - "Guys, which proverb best describes the idea of the video? use the chat for your answers. Why do you think so?"

Highlighting (4-6 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

"Guys, let's look at the short summary of the story again. You see I highlighted the grammar that we're going to work with. So, are these tenses past/present/future tenses? - "Look at the sentences from the story, they are on the left. The sentences contain our target grammar. On the right, you have the meanings of these tenses. Try to match the sentences to the meanings. Do it alone, you have 3-4 minutes." Show students the slide with the answers. (slide 10)

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

(slides 11-14) Work with every sentence from the story. Show students the timelines, clarify the meanings using CCQs. After that show them slide 15 and ask them to work individually and formulate the rule by choosing the correct option for each of the sentences. Show slide 16 with the answers. Work with the form (+,-,?), try to elicit the form for every tense from the students. (slides 17-22). Work with the pronunciation, pay attention to the linking. Model and drill the correct pronunciation. (slides 23-27).

Controlled Practice (7-9 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

(slide 28) Tell students that they are going to practise these tenses. Show them the story, ask to work together and open the brackets. Give them 7 minutes. - "Guys, it's time for practise. There is a story. Work together and open the brackets. You have 7 minutes." ICQ Which tenses are you going to use? What do you need to do? Show the answers on slide 29. Check together.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Tell students that they're going to create stories. Show them pictures and ask them to talk about the yesterday of the people. Ask them to think what was happening and what had happened before. Ask them to work together, give them 6 minutes. Ask them to listen to their partners and then share the funniest story. Explain to them that you created some beginnings for them, so it'll be easier for them to start. Show them the example of how to do the task. Ask them to choose any pictures. Compliment students on interesting discussions. Nominate 1-2 students to share any funny stories that they had. Share examples of speech that is good, incorrect, and that can be reformulated. Elicit from students whether each example is correct. Provide corrections and model/drill pronunciation if necessary. (extra)Ask students what they liked about the class. - "Which activity did you like most of all?"
