Description

In this lesson, students will practice listening skills in the context of fights and arguments with siblings.

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, learners will have practiced listening for gist and detailed comprehension
  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about childhood memories in the context of arguements and fights with siblings

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice via telling anectodes in the context of childhood memories, fights and arguments with siblings

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss are shown two pictures of sisters. Asked about their siblings and their relationships with them.

Pre-Teach Vocabulary (8-10 minutes) • To eliminate any confusion that may be caused by unknown vocabulary items

Ss are asked to complete the vocab activity themselves, answer key is shown.

Pre-Reading/Listening - Prediction Task (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ss are asked to generate stories based on the clues given on slide 2, they are sent to BORs to exchange ideas with each other. A few of them are asked upon their return for their ideas.

While-Listening #1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening task

With slide 3, Ss are asked if their predictions were correct. They are asked to tell what really happened briefly.

While-Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening task

Ss are asked to read the questions and listen to the track again, to answer the quesions. They are sent to BORs to check their answers with each other, whole class feedback follows.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss are asked to assume the one of the roles and make up stories with the given clues on slide 7. They are sent to BORs to tell each other the stories they made up. One or two are asked about their stories when they return.
