In this lesson students are introduced to the future forms will and won't for the first time. They learn a specific use of these forms, which is to make predictions about future.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of will / won't (predictions) in the context of Think positive or negative.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review and practice of opposite verbs in the context of future predictions.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students ask each other if they are pessimists or optimists by providing some reasons for their answer.

Pre-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Students match verbs with opposite meaning in pairs on the page 157.

Pre-Reading #2 (5-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Students look at the dialogue and of cats and explain the meaning of optimist prediction and pessimist prediction.

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students read the conversation and label the responses O for optimist and P for pessimist.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students listen to audio with right answers and answer to the question at excercise C in pairs.

Grammar bank (8-10 minutes) • To repeat and comprehend grammar

Students go to the page of grammar bank and comprehend new grammar of the day by creating examples in pairs and checking in groups.
