Jigsaw method
intermediate, B1, 9 grade level

Description

In this activity students will learn and teach each other about animal species using jigsaw method in the classrom. Jigsaw method will help students to participate in group discussions, became more sociable.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide specific information and detailed listening and speaking practice using a text about Animal species: mammals in the context of vertebrate species: mammals.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about Main characteristics of the mammalian class, outer structure of mammals, mammalian interior

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher greets students, asks them leading questions, for instance: - How do you think guys, which class of animals do human belongs to?

Exposure (5-8 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

Teacher explains to students, how to divide into groups of 3 persons, gives them texts and gives instructions for exercise.

Task (6-8 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive and receptive skills

Students should read given text about one of the sub-theme attentively

Planning (6-8 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to plan students' explanation to their "home group"

Students grouping with another student who have the same text as theirs, discussing different ways to describe their topic to groupmates, making notes.

Language Practice (10-10 minutes) • To provide students with practice of the task language

After planning and discussing ways of explanation with "expert group", members come back to their "home group" and provide them information about the topic they read

Test of knowledge (7-9 minutes) • To check how well students explained and memorized given knowledge about Mammals

Teacher asks students about information in the text, except the one of "expert group" to check how well did member of "expert group" explained topic.
