Main Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about the underground city of Coober Pedy

  • To provide practice of new vocabulary in the context of unsual homes

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss are told they will be playing a dictation game before moving into the reading. For this, they are to write numbers 1 to 6 from top down in the notebook.. Ss then listen and write the key words they hear. Elicit and check answers.

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ss then are to listen to 5 sentences to place the right key word in the right context. Elicit and check answers. To consolidate the student understanding of the new vocabulary, they are asked to decide which picture best describes each key word in slide 7. The next step is a short writing activity to get student prepared for the reading text that follows.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Stuswbta are told that now they are going to read and listen to a text about an underground city called Coober Pedy. They answer these two questions as you read along. Elicit before you check answers. 1. How many of the people in the town live in underground homes? 2. When was the first opal discovered in Coober Pedy?

While-Reading/Listening #2 (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students are asked to read and listen to the text again to answer 3 questions to check comprehension and make connections with their lives.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students are asked to work is pairs to summarıze the text to each other by using the key words.T walks around to monitor and feed in language when necessary. Change pairs if time permits.
