Main Aims

  • To provide a written comparison of their own home to a given home.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide inference about the location and the country of the homes described in the pictures.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

SLIDE 1 T shows a picture of Yurt and asks thought-rpvoking questions one at time to elicit answers from ss. The aim is to guide students to descover the fact that yurts are suitable homes for the changable climate of Mongolian steppes and nomadic life style. They are also sustainable as they are made of natural material. What is this type of home called? A Yurt. -Where are Yurts common? In Central Asia, particularly Mongolia -Why do people live in homes like this? Think about climate and lifestyle. -Are they more or less sustainable that regular homes ?

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/speaking

SLIDES 2-5 T explains that ss are going to read description of different homes from different climates. They are then to identify the country in which home is located by making inferences. T helps students with any new vocabulary and only reveals answers after having elicited them from students. After checking, T guides students to explore that : -Tunisia is part of the Sahara desert -Switzerland is in the Alps -Vietnam is located in a tropical climate where it rains a lot -New Guinea is in a tropical climate where trees grow very tall -New Mexico has a desert-like continental climate -Kenya has pleasant, tropical climate but it very high above the sea level -Amsterdam is an expensive City and has many canals ( Here T points aut that people need to adapt not just to the climate but also other conditions.)

Productive Task(s) (10-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

T projects the last slide on board and explaints the writing task to students . She reminds them of the texts covered earlier in the lesson. She then clarifies the guiding questions one by one and points out the meaning of 'sustainable' T explains that after ss are done writing, they have to cut out the picture of the home they chose and stick it inside the writing frame. Later they cut out the along the writing frame too and note down their name at the bottom. T then delivers handouts, monitors and feeds in language as needed. T leaves the last slide on for ss to see the color pictures of the homes.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

T invites volunters to share their paragraphs with class as time permits. She takes notes while ss are reading out their writing notes and provides feedbak in private later. Ss display paragraphs on the wall for everyone to read in their own time.
