Description

In this lesson, I will be teaching students to talk about their daily life using adverbs of frequency: always, usually, never, etc.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of adverbs of frequency in the context of routines and activities

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice with adverbs of frequency in the context of routines and activities

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shares screen of Google Jamboard on Zoom. T. instructs Ss to answer the questions: What do you usually do on weekends? What do you rarely do on weekends?" T gives demo first and puts Ss in Breakout rooms (Pw-2 min) - ICQ: Are you working in pairs or indivudually? how long do you have for the task? T. writes Ss answers on sticky notes on Jamboard. (1 min)

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T will let Ss know they are going to read a short conversation and shares link in chat. T. instructs Ss to read the text for the overall idea and answer the question “what are they talking about” (1 min) T asks ICQs: - Are you reading for details or the overall idea? T then instructs SS to discuss their answers in pairs (1 min.). T nominates some Ss. to share their answers with the whole class

Highlighting (3-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T. will have Ss go to next section in google forms document. T. will instruct students to mark all the adverbs of frequency T will do a demo with Ss to ensure understanding. (2 min PW) - ICQ are we marking one box or all the boxes that apply? T will go over answers by nominating Ss to each give one answer.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Meaning: T will have Ss match the adverbs of frequency with the percentage at which they occur T will do demo with first one (Pw 2 min) Always 100% sometimes 30% Never 0% etc CCQ: If I say "I always Wake up early" does that mean I do it every day or once a week? Form: T will have Ss match form to sentence (Pw 1 min) Subject + adverb + Verb negative: subject +don't/doesn't + adverb + verb Pronunciation: T will have Ss identify syllables and stresses in words/ sentences and repeat after to ensure proper pronunciation OF/ten We usually pronounce often without the T sound

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T will share google forms link in chat and have Ss complete the sentences with adverbs of frequency. (individual work 3 min) T will do demo to ensure understanding Are you picking any verb to fill in the blank or the adverb of frequency? Are you working individually or in pairs? T will have Ss check answers in pairs ( 2 min) T will nominate Ss for answers

Free Practice (6-7 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T will share screen with list of different activities "hike, go to bed early, drink coffee" etc Ss will be instructed to talk in pairs about how frequently they do the activities, using the adverbs we learned today. ( 5 min) T will do demo ICQ: Is one person talking about the activities or are you discussing it in pairs? How many minutes do you have for this activity

Feedback (5-6 minutes) • Feedback on the Freer Practice and DEC

T while nominate Ss to share their answers to the questions T will do DEC with mistakes heard during the follow up and correct them with Ss
