Description

In this lesson, students will practice some reading skills and subskills in the context of birthdays. They will start with talks on birthday activities and then move on to read a text about the related topic. Students will learn to read for gist as well as details and use relevant vocab to internalize the new language.

Main Aims

  • To enable Ss to infer meaning of related vocab and become familiar with FP(A).

Procedure

Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. Greetings -- Introducing topic -- A special day! --Look at this pic. What do you do on your BD? 2. Choose 3 or 4 challenging words from the text and cover MFP: https://forms.gle/6RpmJLWnD1pzck2M7

Pre-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

3. Give Ss 2 general Qs to have an overall idea about the reading: What do people do in your country on their birthdays? What do you like to do on your birthday? https://forms.gle/9DN4S4tFG8sfQwsDA

While-Reading 1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

4. Read the text (on Google Forms) for the general idea there. (To Ss): Make a title for the text! https://forms.gle/aj7er3S7BRVWcwgH8 5. The learners check the answers in pairs (via breakout rooms) before OCFB (Open Class Feedback)

While-Reading 2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

6. Now read a second time and answer questions or True/False (G Forms) https://forms.gle/T44vjFB9eNiGZf4u8 7. Check the answers in pairs (via breakout rooms)

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned
