Description

This class is to provide students with reading practice for specific information and detail in the context of tipping. Students will start with a discussion of topic related questions, followed by some vocabulary check. Then students will be asked to predict their answers for an exercise before reading the text. Then they will be paired up to check their answers after they read the text. A whole class feedback is conducted then. A more detailed task will be given to students asking them to answer detailed questions after second reading. They will do it individually and follows with a whole class discussion. For last stage, students will be asked to split into two teams, prepare two or more arguments for a simplified debate.

Main Aims

  • To provide detailed and scan reading practices to students in the context of tipping.

  • To provide fluency speaking practice to students .
  • To provide clarification on some challenging words which could obstruct students' reading

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students will be presented with a picture about tipping. I will try to elicit the topic from students and also try to ensure hey know the meaning of tipping. Then they will be asked to discuss three questions related to the topic.

Pre-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

some words are selected from the text to cover before reading. I will try to elicit meanings/form from students by ask if for synonyms or let them guess the meaning by giving the word in the context. Then those words will be discussed about meaning, form, and pronunciation.

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging specific information reading tasks

Before reading the text, students will get a worksheet for them to make predictions about correct words. after 1 minute, they will get the reading text . They will have 2 minutes to read. Then they will check their answers in pairs before a whole class feedback.

While-Reading#2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading task

Students will be asked to read more carefully and answer some more difficult questions . The second time reading ,I will give them more time , 3 or 3.5 minutes depends on the time. Then the whole class will discuss together .

Post-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

A simplified debate about should we tip will be set up for this part. students will be asked to split into two groups and each group will prepare 2 or more arguments about the topic. After group discussion, each group will present their arguments. I will ask if anyone has changed their mind about tipping after the debate or to ask the whole class which teams wins to end the class.
