In this lesson, students will be practicing the functional language of asking for and giving permission

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of language used for asking for permisson and giving permission

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a informal and formal enviroment in the context of permission

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will project jam board: T will tell students to think about when you would ask for permission T instructs Ss they will be discussing these questions in pairs and that they have 2 minutes ICQ: Are you thinking about it individually or discussing it in pairs? How many minutes do you have? T will monitor in Breakout rooms After breakout rooms T will nominate Ss to answer the question and put examples on sticky notes

Exposure (3-4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T. shares screen and shares link in chat. T. gives instructions: Ss. need to read the text and answer the question “what are they talking about” (1 min) T then instructs SS to discuss their answers in pairs (1 min.). T nominates some Ss. to share their answers with the whole class

Highlighting (3-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T. will have Ss go to next section in google forms document. T. will instruct students to mark the sentences from the text that are giving permission T will do a demo and then send students into breakout rooms (2 min PW) - ICQ are we marking one box or all the boxes that apply? T will go over answers with group by nominating Ss

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Meaning: Can I use this? - requesting permission CCQs: what other words can replace "can"? Is this formal or informal? Form: Modal verb (can, may, could) + I + Action Pronunciation: primary stress is on Can and this linking between Can and I

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will ask Ss to complete a fill in the blank form (Individual work 4 min) T. will give demo with first question ICQ: are you working in pairs or individually? How many minutes do you have to complete the task? I will have Ss compare their answers in breakout rooms(PW 2 min). T. will monitor breakout rooms T will show an answer key with 2 incorrect answers, T nominate students to identify which answers are incorrect.

Free Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T will instruct students to Take turns asking permission and granting/denying permission with the phrases we used today. T will give demo Question/answer first. ICQ: Is one person asking the questions or are you taking turns? T. will monitor while Ss are in breakout rooms

Feedback (4-5 minutes) • Feedback on the Freer Practice and DEC

OCFB on the activity T will do DEC with mistakes heard during the follow up and correct them with Ss
