TP1- Listening
Pre-Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students will listen to a text to help improve receptive skills.

Materials

Abc Multiple choice and short answer questions in Google Forms

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about New Years celebrations in the context of Different Cultures

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of vocabulary used to discuss New Years in different cultures.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will first put the 4 questions up on the screen, then put them into the chat box and nominate a student to ask me them. I will answer them to show example. I will then ask the students to ask each other the same questions as shown below: 1. Is New Year an important celebration in your country? 2. What do people usually do? 3. Where do you usually spend New Year? 4. Who do vou spend it with?

Pre-Listening (4-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will explain the task and then ask ICQ’s (Do you work individually or with a partner? Individually.) I will ask them not to submit it. I will ask my students to read the following sentences and answer the questions that follow them: MEANING I need an ENVELOPE to put a birthday card in. CCQ: Do I want to give a birthday card without it in something? No We baked some BISCUITS in the oven then ate them after dinner. CCQ: Are these something sweet we eat as dessert? Yes They put some COAL on the fire to help it burn. CCQ: Does this help the fire to work better? Yes OYSTERS are my favorite kind of seafood. CCQ: Are they a type of seafood found in a shell? Yes FORM I will elicit the form from Ss. PRONUNCIATION 1. I will model words. 2. I will ask Ss to identify number of syllables and stress. 3. I will ask my Ss to drill.

While-Listening #1 (3-4 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

I will explain the task and then ask ICQ’s (How long do you have? Do you work individually or with a partner?) I will ask the Ss to listen to the text for gist and choose a title from the 3 choices given on a Google Form as multiple choice. The 3 questions are: 1. People in different cultures eat different foods. 2. New Year celebrations in two different cultures. *correct answer* 3. Karen and Johnny are from different countries. I will play the beginning of the listening, checking first that the students can hear it. I will give my students 5-10 seconds to work individually after the track has stopped. We will then have open class feedback to check the correct answer.

While-Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

I will explain the task then ask ICQ’s (Do you work individually or with a partner?). I will ask them not to submit it. I will ask Ss to look at the questions that need completion for 30 secs. I will play the listening for them, making sure they can hear it first. Ss will complete the multiple choice and short answer questions in Google Forms. I will play the listening again for students to be able to check their answers. If 4 or more Ss attend, I will use breakout rooms for them to compare answers with a partner. If not, I will ask students to ask to nominate each other to answer. I will then provide some open-class feedback during this time as I will ask students if they agree with the answer given by the nominated student.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I will show a question on the screen and get a student to read it. I will then put the question in the chat box. After that, I will get a student to ask me it and I will answer to show an example. As the class normally only has 2-3 students attend, I will ask the Ss to take turns asking each other the question. “Would you like to experience New Years in another culture? Why or why not?”
