In this lesson, students practice their reading skills (general understanding and detailed understanding) in the context of habits and tips for staying healthy.

Materials

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about tips and habits for staying healthy in the context of gym and daily routine

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Introducing the context by asking, "How do you stay healthy?" The slide shows some images related to gym culture and healthy habits. SS brainstorm

Pre-Reading/Listening (10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ask ss to work individually to match the sentences with the correct image. After they compare their answers, T provides group feedback. T models pronunciation (see LA) and stress of the key words. SS choose the correct form in each sentence of the HO.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

SS choose the best headline for the first paragraph of the text. They access Google slide. After they compare their answers, and T provides feedback.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

SS read the rest of the text. They match the tips with the images. Group feedback.

Post-Reading/Listening (10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

SS work individually; they have to choose which is the best tip for them. They write down or make notes for their answers to these three questions: 1. Which do you think is the best tip? Why? 2. Do you do any of these things? Which? 3. Which of these things would you like to do in the future? Then they share the answers with the group
