To motivate students to use receptive skills through a number of reading exercises for gist and learning about using reporting verbs.
Procedure (47-60 minutes)
Teacher will set the stage for class through activating schemata by posting a few news clips on WB. Lead in is eliciting questions in context and introducing grammar points generally.
The teaching stage includes setting up scenarios using reporting verbs and individual and pair work reading and identifying target language.
First reading of text - individual. Through the reading exercise students find and choose the correct reporting verb (they are bolded in reading text). An exercise of identifying and clarifying the 2 different types of reporting verbs I will create a list and general method to select correct verbs using "Verbs like TOLD' + direct object (object case pronouns) and 'Verbs like SAID + that/to/ indirect.
WC game to categorize list of verbs and then correct them on WB through posting of strips of paper.
Students write their own news clip using reported verbs correctly and then read them to the class if time allows.
