Description

In this lesson students earn about different types of food offered by the restaurants through guided discovery based on a reading text of a restaurant's menu. This lesson starts with a discussion about guessing the teacher's favorite kind of food. This is followed by an exercise to introduce some pre-text vocabulary (PTV) where students match the pictures with the right words. Furthermore, there will be a group activity to classify the different kinds of food by scanning the the reading text menu. Finally, there will be discussions in groups as each student will describe the most favorite kind of food.

Main Aims

  • • To provide students with new vocabulary about food menu. To enhance the skimming reading skill. To enhance their scanning approach while reading. To be able to express their opinions about the food and discuss it in groups to enhance their speaking skill.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide some discussions to enhance their speaking. To enhance their writing skill through writing and classifying different kinds of food. To learn new vocabulary words.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Start with a personalized question and then start asking them questions about different food to lead them to the context

Pre-Reading (7-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible.

Introduce them to new Pre-Text Vocabulary through a matching exercise to be carried out individually first then check it in pairs.

While-Reading (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading task

Ask them to solve the first task to enhance their skimming approach while reading in groups of three students in each group.

Post-Reading/ Free Practice (5-6 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned.

Ask the students to discuss together what food does each one like on this menu and why?
