Description

In this lesson, students learn about comparatives and superlatives in the context of nature. It is a flipped classroom and students have already watched the grammar video. Therefore, the grammar is going to be elicited from the class through some whole-class questions and consolidated through a series of controlled and free practices. The content of the lesson is from pages 88 and 89 of the Speakout Pre-intermediate course book, a supplementary worksheet, and a few PowerPoint presentations.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of comparatives and superlatives in the context of nature and environment
  • To provide practice of comparatives and superlatives in the context of nature and environment

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a survey in the context of how to preserve the environment
  • To provide review of vocabulary words and collocations in the context of nature and environment

Procedure

Warm-up (5-7 minutes) • to set lesson context and engage students in an speaking activity

I will share a Jamboard activity with the students on Google Classroom. In this Jamboard, students will compare 3 mountain ranges in terms of height and length and 3 deserts in terms of area. The information about these natural places is available to students. I will model the task by projecting the first slide of the Jamboard and saying: According to the information here, Himalayas is the highest mountain range and Rocky is shorter than Andes. Which one do you think is the shortest Nisa? (Himalayas)

Grammar Review (10-12 minutes) • The aim is to review comparative superlative grammar rules

I will share the Jeopardylab link with students on GC and ask them tp play in groups of 3 or 4 students. The game reviews the comparative superlative grammar rules.

Grammar practice (20-25 minutes) • The aim is to practice comparative superlative grammar rules in the context of environment

I will tell students that the are going to make predictions about some environmental topics. I will tell them that they are supposed to work alone first to complete the sentences. Then we check with the whole class. Then I will tell them to work in pairs to ask about their partner's idea and take brief notes. Then students have to find out why their friends believe so. In the end each group decides about the best practice tp preserve the environment and why they think so.

Ex. 7 page 89 (7-10 minutes) • The aim is to practice comparative superlative grammar rules

I will ask students to turn to page 89 and find exercise 7. I will tell them that exercise 7 is an speaking exercise. I will ask question one to class (Do you recycle? Why?why not?) and tell them they are going to interview each other to find out who the greenest person is in their group. I also tell them to report to class who that person is and why.
