Main Aims

  • To provide detailed and specific information listening practice using a text about directions round the city in the context of dialogue between two students

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a dialogue and competition in the context of giving directions

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (6-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. Write "Places in a Town" on WB and write Post Office below. 2. Put students in pairs and tell them list as many other places as they can think of that are found in a city. 3. Write "It's a place where ..." on WB and choose one of the places to describe it to the class, and let the Ss. guess it. 4. Put the Ss. in pairs to describe places to each other in the same way.

Pre-Listening (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

1. Put up the flashcards that have the names of places and their descriptions, directions and their pictures on the board, and ask the Ss. to match them. 2. Use CCQs to make the meaning more clear.

While-Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

1. Give each student a copy of map. 2. Give them time to study it closely. 3. Tell them to find the two students go on a treasure hunt around the city. 4. Each clue directs them to a place in the city. 5. Tell them there are four clues, and four places in total. 6. Play the reacording. 7. Ask Ss. to check their answers in pairs.

While-Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

1. Tell Ss. that they are going to listen again. 2. Explain that this time they must write each of the clues. 3. Play the recording. 4. Then Ss. compare their answers in pairs and check their answers from the tapescript

Post-Listening (6-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

1. Tell the Ss. to work in pair and give directions to each other from ITI to any place they can see. 2. Their partner must listen to their directions and correctly guess the place they are giving directions to.

Post-Listening (10-11 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to respond to the text and expand what they've learned

1. Tell the Ss. to think of a place nearby and to write directions from ITI to that place. 2. When they are ready, tell the Ss. to stand up and find a partner. 3. They should read their directions while their partner listens and tries to identify the place they are giving directions to. 4. Encourage students to change partners as many as possible.
