Main Aims
-
To review and practice future continuous and future perfect in the context of means of communication.
Subsidiary Aims
-
Fluency speaking and reading for gist
Procedure (35-50 minutes)
-To set the lesson context and engage the ss I will show a slide with 4 old fashioned means of communication. - I will ask ss if they can think of some more modern means of communication that almost everybody uses nowadays. ( i.e. chat rooms, email, mobile phone, text messaging, face time). This will get them thinking about modern ways of communication.
To provide context for the TL I will show ss a slide with a short article with the title: "Is the art of conversation dying". - Task: Quickly read this posting that appeared on an internet site and answer two questions: 1) What kind of person is the writer? (He does not like the modern means of communication, might be old, prefers conversations face-to-face) 2) What is his attitude towards modern mean of communication? (He does not like them because you do not speak and meet people anymore) - Check if ss have questions about the questions. -I will give ss 1 minute to read; - then we will do an OCFB.
- To draw ss attention to the target language I will ask them if they can spot the sentences that use the Future Continuous or the Future Perfect.
To clarify Meaning, Form and Pronunciation I will show them a slide with two of the sentences containing FC and FP and will clarify the use of these tenses by eliciting CCQ's and showing timelines for both sentences. - ad 1) CCQ: Where will we be living in the year 3000? In high-tech bubbles. CCQ: Will we be living in these bubbles before the year 3000? Yes CCQ: Will we be living in these bubbles after the year 3000? Yes CCQ: Will we only be living in these bubbles in the year 3000? No. CCQ: Are we living in these bubbles now? No CCQ Have we lived in these bubbles in the past? No CCQ: Are people literally living in bubbles by the year 3000? No, high-tech bubbles are meant figuratively. -Show a timeline to explain the future continuous is used for an action in progress at a particular time. ask ss: What is the opposite of this sentence? “By the year 3000, we won’t be living in our own separate little high-tech bubbles” ask ss.: How would you put this sentence in question form: “By the year 3000, will everybody be living in their own separate little high tech bubbles?” ad 2) CCQ: Will we lose the use of our voices before the year 3000? Yes CCQ: Will we only lose the use of our voices in the year 3000? No CCQ: Will we have lost the use of our voices after the year 3000? Yes CCQ: Why will we lose the use of our voices by the year 3000? Because we will live in our own separate high tech bubbles and do not have to speak to each other anymore. CCQ: Are we able to speak/use our voices in the year 3000? No Show a timeline: explaining that the future perfect involves three concepts: a) looking into the future to a certain time ( the year 3000); b) looking backwards from that future time towards the present; c) noticing what actions will be done (and possibly completed) in the period between that future time and the present ( lost the use of our voices). Ask ss.: What is the opposite of this sentence? “ By the year 3000, we won’t have lost the use of our voices.” ask ss. :How do you put this sentence into question form? “ By the year 3000, will we have lost the use of our voices?” Form: show slide indicating both forms of Present Continuous and Present Perfect. -ask ss if they have questions and ask CCQ: Can we say" we'll have be living in high tech bubbles"NO. -Pronunciation: 1) “When the year 3000 comes, we’ll all be living in our own little separate high-tech bubbles.” /wiːl/ /ɔːl/ /biː/ /ˈlɪv.ɪŋ Indicate stress is on the nouns and adjectives (not on the grammatical words, ie.verbs, pronouns, prepositions) with dots on the words. Indicate “we’ll all be” is linked and “our own” (connected speech) with arrows. Intonation goes up in first part of the sentence and down in second part. - Model sentence, have ss. repeat twice, then have them repeat individually. 2)” We’ll have lost the use of our voices”. /wiːl/ /həv/ /lɒst/ Indicate stress is on the nouns and adjectives (not on the grammatical words, ie.verbs, pronouns, prepositions) with dots on the words. Indicate “we’ll have” is linked and “use of our” (connected speech) with arrows. - Model sentence, have ss. repeat twice, then have them repeat individually.
-To provide controlled practice of the language I will show ss a slide with exercise 2. -ss will do this individually . They will have 5 minutes to do this. -ss will check their answers in BOR's in 4 minutes. -I will do OCFB
To provide ss with free practice of the TL I will ask them to discuss in pairs in BOR's whether they agree or disagree with the sentence: " By the year 3000 we'll all be living in our own separate little hi-tech bubbles and we will not use our voice anymore." -I will monitor in BOR's for mistakes and good use of TL - I will do Feedback and Delayed Error correction.
