Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide controlled speaking practice of Wh questions in the context of describing daily routines.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide practice of telling time in the context of daily lives
Procedure (36-45 minutes)
- Play a 2-minute video about daily routine using time and simple present. - Write 3 questions on the board and ask learners to volunteer answer them. 1- When does she wake up? 2- Where does she go at 9 o'clock? 3- What does she do at noon?
- Transition from lead in by saying "Now that we've learned about her, let's learn about each other" and show a list of five Wh questions about daily routine. - Ask students to read the questions silently for 1 minute. - Group them into breakout rooms in groups of 2-3 people and they ask these questions to each other and remember or write down their partner's answers. - Give them 5 minutes to do the activity and ask ICQ questions before sending them such as "what will we do?" "How much time do we have?" . - After the 5 minutes, bring them back to the main room and make each learner tell me one item on their partner's daily routine list. (I might ask questions to elicit specific answers).
- Introduce the concept of the Present Simple tense, explaining its use for talking about our habits and daily routines. - Write example sentences on the board, such as "She wakes up at 8 o'clock," and analyze the structure of the tense (subject + V.inf / V + s,es,or ies). - Write example Wh question on the board, such as "When do you go to work?" and analyze the structure of the tense (Wh article+ do/does + subject + V.inf.). - Practice pronunciation as well. - Play a game where a learner chooses a random number, and it could be a question and they answer, or an answer and they form a question.
- Prepare a sequence of words, pictures, and clocks that when added together would form a Simple Present sentence or question. For example, the word Jack, a picture of a boy eating, and a clock that says 12 o'clock which would be "Jack eats lunch at 12 o'clock". - I will give them 1 minute to look at them. - I will solve one to model the exercise for them. - I will split them into 2 groups and ask them to solve all the sequences together. - They will have 5 minutes and I will monitor their performance. - Bring them back to the main room and elicit feedback.
Summarize the key points of the lesson, emphasizing the use of the Present Simple tense to discuss daily lives. Encourage students to continue using the tense in their everyday conversations.
