Description

In this lesson, ss will practise reading for a gist and reading for a specific information in the context of reading a report about the best and the worst countries to be an expatriate. Then, ss will be encouraged to do semi -controlled speaking about the countries they would like to be expats in and about the benefits / the challenges they might face there

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, ss will have practised semi controlled speaking and reading for a gist / a specific information in the context of the best and the worst countries for an expatriate

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of the new vocabulary used in the reading article

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To generate interest to the topic and set the context

T will write the word EXPAT on the board and ask the ss about its meaning, what is the full word? Ask the ss if they would like to move abroad? to which countries and why? T will elicit their answers

Set Context (5-10 minutes) • To introduce ss to the topic

T will write the names of the following countries on the board : CHINA, GERMANY, EGYPT, QATAR, SINGAPORE, IRELAND, SWITZERLAND. Then will ask ss to make prediction about the best and the worst country in their point of view for expats. T will elicit the ss answers.

To pre-teach vocabulary (10-15 minutes) • To prevent Ls blocking on unknown vocabulary in the questions or answers

The new vocabulary: 1- expatriate (N): /ekˈspæt.ri.eɪt/ 2-xenophobia (N): /ˌzen.əˈfəʊ.bi.ə/ 3- to gauge (verb) /ɡeɪdʒ/ 4- child-rearing (N): /ˈtʃaɪldˌrɪə.rɪŋ/ 5- hardship post (collocations): /ˈhɑːd.ʃɪpəʊst/ 6-Woe (N): /wəʊ/ 7-legislation (N): /ˌledʒ.ɪˈsleɪ.ʃən/ 8-social service (N): /ˌsəʊ.ʃəl ˈsɜː.vɪs/ T will teach the vocabulary in a test through a mix and match activity. Ss will be divided into 2 teams A & B. T will hand team A cards with the vocabulary and team B cards with their definitions. T will ask the two teams to mix together and to try to match each word with its definition and then to stick them on the board. After that, ss are asked to check in pairs followed by T's feedback.

Reading for a gist (3-5 minutes) • To give Ls a reason to read

T will ask ss to skim the article quickly in 3 minutes and to answer the following true or false questions: 1- Bahrain and Switzerland are from the best countries for expats ( ) 2- Egypt is not a suitable country to be an expat ( ) 3- If you want to have kids a broad China will be the best place ( ) Then, T will ask ss to check their answers in pairs, followed by T's feedback and

Reading for a specific information (20-25 minutes) • To give Ls a reason to read for individual items of information

T will ask ss to read the article again to answer the following exercises: B. Match the sentence parts to show the reason: 1- Germany is the best country for expats 2-Life in Asia's developing countries is preferred 3-Egypt is considered the worst country for foreigners 4-China is considered the best country 5-The Middle east countries are not considered a suitable place for expats 6-Western Europe is among the worst countries for living a- as they have very strong economics. b-because of the social restrictions. c-to raise expat children d-because of the rise of xenophobia and military coup e- as expats are paid by 15% more than other countries f- because of the high taxes and the cost of life C. Fill in the blanks with a word from below: legislations - child-rearing - Woes - xenophobia - guest workers - hardship post 1- Germany is on the top countries for _______ abroad. 2- The ______ in the Middle East Countries make it tough for expats to own a property. 3- The rise of _____ in Egypt make it a not recommended place for foreigners. 4- _______from South and Southeast Asia are mistreated in Qatar. 5- Despite the economic _____ in Europe, Germany and Switzerland are considered favorable places for expats. 6- The difficult living conditions in China make it a ______ for expats T will ask ss to check their answers in pairs, followed by T's feedback and the answer keys.

Speaking activity (15-20 minutes) • To practise a semi controlled speaking in the context of best countries for expats

T writes on the board: if you had to live abroad, which country would you prefer and why? what are the benefits and challenges you might face in this country? how long would you plan to live there? Then T will do a demonstration and will support ss with useful language about the topic eg: " I would prefer __ because of the high salaries" - "The quality of education" - "However the cost of living is __ "- the affordable rent is really important to me". ss will have preparation time for 5 minutes, then they will be asked to talk in pairs. Next, T will ask ss to stand up and change partners and try to find someone that share the same ideas as him/her. Finally, T gives content feedback
