Main Aims

  • To practice and revise past and present time phrases in the context of favorite music bands.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice in speaking and using the time phrases.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To engage ss in the topic of favorite music bands I will show them a picture of a live concert. I will tell them two of my friends went to a live concert of Juanes in Mexico City last weekend and I will ask them: When was the last time you saw a live band ?

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

To prepare ss for the target language I will ask them if they remember the article about family music band in TP1. - I will first ask ss. what they remember about the text; - I will conduct and open class feedback; - I will send the text to ss. again via chat; - I will also put the text on the screen and ask ss. if they see the bold text.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

-To draw ss attention to the target language I will ask them if they see the bold language in the article. - It might be difficult to see the bold parts so I will show a slide with a list of all the bold phrases in it and ask ss if they can tell me what these phrases have in common. - when ss have answered correctly that these are past and present time phrases, I will ask ss. if they can give me some more examples of time phrases and write "Time phrases" on the slide.

Clarification (10-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

To prepare ss for the exercises I will clarify the following target language: 1) Nowadays: meaning: First I will ask students if they know the word and show two context phrases: " Over the last few years we have grown up and we rarely argue nowadays." " Nowadays most children go online instead of reading books." - ask ss if they can think of a synonym: today or in these days - CCQ: Does this word refer to the past or the present? Present -CCQ: Does it refer to just today or can it be a longer period of time in the present? Longer period -CCQ: Can we day "Nowadays it is raining"? No, the reference to the past is missing and it only refers to today. - Say that nowadays is more broad than today. It can refer to many days or even years. - draw a timeline to show this word refers to something which continues in the present. Form: say it is an adverb - can be used at the beginning, in the middle or at the end of a sentence. -usually followed by the present simple Pronunciation: -pronounce the word with stress on the first syllable -mark the first syllable on the screen, have ss repeat it. 2) At one time; Meaning: show context sentences : " At one time their album Saturday Night fever was number one for 24 consecutive weeks in the US, and it is still the best soundtrack album of all times. " 'At one time I wanted to be a doctor but the thought of being in a hospital all day put me off". -ask ss if they know the meaning - ask them for a synonym: once or at some point - CCQ: Does this word refer to the past or the present? Past -CCQ: Could we say ;" At one time I am going to drink beer"? No. Why not? It does not refer to the past. - CCQ: Does the sentence ' I ate my grapes one at a time" have the same meaning? No Form: adverb - tell ss you can not change the word order without changing the meaning. It is a fixed time phrase. - CCQ; can we put this time phrase at the end of a sentence? Can we say he was a doctor at one time? No, only in the beginning or middle of a sentence. Pronunciation: use marker to put stress on the last two words, say the phrase and make ss repeat it. 3) Former: Show context sentences: " Ozzy Osborne-former singer with heavy metal band Black Sabbath." " Her former husband now lives in Houston." - ask ss if they know the meaning -ask if they know a synonym; (previous) -CCQ: What time does this word refer to?
