Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of using past continuous simple and past simple to tell a story in the past .

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist listening and listening for details

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-tell the students about the learning outcomes . show them a slide of " shark swimming near a man " . Set the Ss in groups to answer the following : " where can you find this picture ?" " in the news " " in which news category can you find it ?" " odd stories " " What do you think happened ?" " What are the popular news categories ?" and elicit the answers . Show Ss a picture of news online site with the popular categories and ask one of them to read the categories.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through listening to news stories .

introduce the task to the students " now , you will listen to news stories .Try to know the news category of each story " Ss will listen once " for gist " to find out the news category of each story . Check their answers as a class activity . Give the Ss the text of the listening and they will listen again " for details " and complete the missing parts . Ss work in groups to check their answers . Show the Ss a slide of the correct answers to check their own .

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

show the Ss the slice of the listening text . ask them to individually separate the ongoing actions and the events that interrupted them into two columns. students check their answers in groups .Then I will show them the correct answer .

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

ask students about the structure of Past simple continuous ( they have studied earlier ). Elicit the target language by asking CCQs :" Are these stories happened in the past ?"" Yes " " Did we use past continuous simple for the ongoing action ?" " Yes " " Did we use the past simple for the events that interrupted these actions ?"" Yes". ask Ss the meaning of intonation and the types of it to refresh their information .( the Ss have already studied the intonation and know about raising and falling intonation ) Ss listen to the pronunciation task in the student's book and try to find out the correct intonation in the following sentences ." falling at the end of the sentences " " While divers were working off the coast of Florida ,they discovered a shipwreck ." falling intonation at the end of each sentence. " As Jack was running toward the ball , he tripped and kicked it into the wrong goal " falling intonation at the end of both sentences .

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

students individually complete the missing parts in the text using past simple continuous and past simple . then in groups they check their answers together . Then I will show them the correct answer .

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Students in groups will use the first sentence of each story in the previous exercise and complete by a story of their own . a member of each group will tell the class about their story

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

SS in groups will tell a true story about themselves . I will ask one of each group to tell their story .

(2 minutes) • wrap-up

ask Ss what have we studied today ?
