Description

In this lesson, students will practice skimming and scanning in the context of public transits in cities. The lesson starts with a brief lead-in where students are exposed to the text. This is followed by a jigsaw reading where students read and relate about transportation in different cities.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about cities in the context of fast city transport in different cities in the world

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide the opportunity for the learners to learn new words about transportation and use them in the production stage

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher shows the first slide and asks the students to guess what it can be. This process is continued and the teacher shows more parts of the pic each time trying to elicit the answers from the students until the image is revealed. This is followed by a few images of the transportation system in Istanbul to engage the learners. If time, the teacher opens Mentimeter presentation and asks the learners to describe the public transit in Istanbul in one word.

Predicting stage (2-4 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The teacher shows the pictures of the three cities to the students and elicits some of the answers (pg. 72). If time, he will ask a couple of questions about the cities they mention to prepare them for the text

While-Reading/Listening #1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

The teacher shows the text to the students and gives them 2 min to match the paragraphs to the pictures (ex b). After that, they will do peer-checking to share the answers. For the FB, the teacher shows the answer on the board.

Blocking Words (3-5 minutes) • To pre-teach/unblock key vocab needed to help students complete the reading ask

The teacher opens the PPTs and shows the pics to the students one by one and tries to elicit the words (routes, lane, statue, and palace) from the students. After they learn the words, the teacher focuses on pronunciation through drilling and finally he shows the words to the students.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (12-14 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

For this stage of the lesson, the teacher puts the students in 3 groups, each of which has to read only one paragraph. In each group, each member has a number from 1 to 6, depending on the number of ss in each group. They will be given enough time to read the paragraph in detail. Then, the teacher puts the students in different groups according to their numbers; 1s, 2s, 3s, etc. together respectively. in their new groups, they will have to explain their paragraphs to their peers. After the jigsaw task, the teacher draws ss' attention to ex. c and give them some time to answer the Qs in their groups. Once the students did the task, the teacher shows the Qs (ex. c) on the board and names the students to give the answers 1 by 1. (ss can choose each other) Next, the teacher points to the pictures on the wall which had already been placed there. He distributes HO. 1 and asks the students to place them under the appropriate picture

Post-Reading/Listening (6-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

For the post-reading activity, the teacher draws students' attention to ex.f and puts them in groups of 4 to discuss the Qs. To integrate task-based learning, he asks the students to write a paragraph about public transit in Istanbul for next session.
