Description

In this lesson students will learn modal verbs for probability in the contexts of making plans

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of modal verbs for probability in the context of making plans

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about Travel in the context of making plans
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of making plans

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To start engaging students to the lesson with an ice breaker

Students will be shown a series of different images in order to encourage them to guess what the topic of the lesson will be. Once they have done so, they will be instructed to discuss some questions about it with their peers.

Exposure (2-3 minutes) • To contextualize students with grammar topic they will be learning

Students will be instructed to read a short text and to scan it quickly for 1 minute. After that, they will be given 1 minute to reply to some questions about it.

Clarification-Meaning (3-5 minutes) • To explain the meaning for modal verbs for probability

Students will be presented with two slides, in the first one they will be instructed to match the modal verb with its correct grammar use. In the second one, they will be asked to categorize different modal verbs into uses for certainty and uncertainty. For this activity, they will be sent into break-out rooms and after that, the teacher will give them the answers that they will check in order to see their performance.

Clarification-form (3-5 minutes) • To explain the form of modal verbs for probability

Students will be instructed to observe the structure of modal verbs, shown on a board, and to add the modal verb to the correct column. For this activity, they will work individually and then come back to share their answers with the class.

Clarification-pronunciation (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with practice of pronunciation of modal verbs for probability

Students will be shown three different sentences and will be asked to say where the accent goes and what is its intonation. For this activity, the teacher will nominate students and after they have participated, will provide feedback by drilling.

Control practice (3-5 minutes) • To allows students to practice on their own modal verbs for probability during the lesson

Students will be instructed to rephrase different sentences by using the modal verbs seen during the lesson. For this activity, they will work individually and then come back to the class to receive feedback if needed.

Free practice (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with fluency practice of modal verbs for probability

Students will be sent into break-out rooms and be instructed to choose one from three different topics in order to have a conversation with their peers while using the grammar seen during the lesson.

Feedback and error correction (3-5 minutes) • To clear doubts and giving advice to students

During this task, students will be given time to ask questions and clear any doubts they have about the lesson. Corrections and feedback will be given to them by the teacher if necessary.
