Main Aims

  • To improve reading comprehension skills.
  • To understand the importance of the three Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) for environmental sustainability.
  • To encourage critical thinking and discussion on environmental issues.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students profile: 3 argentinans, 1 peruvian and 1 honduran, between 15.18 years old, 3 boys and 2 girls

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Greet the students and set the context for the lesson. - T shows a slide with the symble of the tree R´s and ask them what it is (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). - Activate prior knowledge by asking students what they know about these concepts.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T Show an image related to recycling and ask students to describe it. Elicit vocabulary related to the image. T asks SS any personal experiences or actions students have taken in support of the environment. Pre-teach essential vocabulary: reduce, reuse, recycle, waste, environment, pollution

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T shows the text on a slide. T ask students to scan the text NOT read, they have to underlinethe words that we previusly saw. T encourage them to identify the three Rs within the text and any reasons why they are important

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T ask students to read the text. T givesthe link for a google forms and ask tehm to answer this questions related to the text: 1. What are the three Rs, and why are they important? 2. How can we reduce our waste at home? 3. Give an example of how you can reuse an item. Then T send students to Break Out Rooms to discuss the answers in pairs or small groups before sharing their responses with the whole class.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T ask students to write a paragraph about how they plan to practice the three Rs in their daily lives. T send students to the BOR's and discuss in small groups or pairs to discuss and then share to te rest of the class.
