In this lesson Ss will revise some film review vocabulary and they they will write their own film review after analysing a model.

Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of writing a film review

Subsidiary Aims

  • Ss will practice their reading for general understanding (gist) in the context of a short film review about the film "The Pursuit of Happyness"

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show Ss an image to know the context of a film review, I will ask them 2 questions: 1-What is a film critic? 2-What is the purpose of a film review?" Ss will discuss their answers in OCFB 2 minutes. If Ss are unsure of what "critic" means or what the purpose of a film review is, I will give them some CCQs: *Is a film critic a person who says bad things about movies or a person who judges how good a movie is? (Judges how good a movie is) *Does a film review tell you how the movie ends? (No) *Is a film review for people who have seen the movie or for those who are thinking about seeing the movie? (thinking about seeing)

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

I will Show Ss my own example of the film review from google docs, and I will give them the tips about the writing of a film review. a)I will help Ss identify the different sections (parts) of the film review I will give them an activity to check the 4 parts of a film review, using a short explanation about each one, they will have to select the correct explanation for each section of a film review. b)the language that is part of it , I will ask Ss to identify if language is formal or informal) I will show them the words in blue in the film review, what tense is normally used in a review? (simple tense) so this is a formal. I will ask them some CCQs CCQ: Is the language in the review mostly formal or informal? (formal) CCQ: Are all film reviews formal? (No, some are casual) CCQ: Is this review more like a professional newspaper article or a casual blog post? (professional) Does the review ever use the first person pronoun “I”? (No) Any ideas why? (makes it seem more professional, suggests less personal opinion and more accepted fact).

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

I will ask Ss to open the link of google forms, and I will check Ss have it - After this I will give Ss an instruction , "you will write your own film review, so make sure you take notes about the paragraphs and useful language." I will say Ss look at the words in red in paragraphs 3 and 4, what kind of language helps you describe the story and your opinion? (adjectives) Instruction: answer these questions in BORs with partners. You have 2 mins. You do not need to submit your answers. ICQ: Are you working individually or in pairs? (in pairs) ICQ: Do you need to press submit (No) I will give Ss a demo. The exercise is about "Read the film review. Does the writer answer all these questions? Check and tick (✓)." Film review : The Theory of Everything- (a true real story ) Ss Return and we will check the answers and we will highlight the parts in the film review that they have seen.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

I will back up to top of the page google doc to give Ss the Instructions to create their film review: 1) Choose a movie that you enjoyed watching and write notes on your own paper about your ideas. You will have 5 minutes to make your notes. You can search the internet for any information that you don't know, such as the name of the director or actors. ICQ: Will you make notes about paragraph 1 or all four paragraphs? (all four paragraphs) ICQ: Do you need to write full sentences or key words? (Key words) ICQ: How long do you have? (5 mins) - I will ask if Ss have any questions, can talk to me by private message Ss will write notes - I will monitor chat, keeps track of timing, gives 2 min time reminder. I will write each student's names on individual google slides in prep for writing review activity. I will put google slides link in chat box, I will ask learners to open link, checks learners have it. Instructions: You will have 12 minutes to write your review. You can ask me for help by sending me a private message in the zoom chat. I will demo clicking slide, highlights name, demos writing and a slide to remember and follow the structure of the paragraphs in the example and use the bolded language expressions. - I will show how each slide has been assigned to a student. - I will write comments in this box at the bottom of your slide. ICQ: How much time do you have? (12 mins) ICQ: Where can you find information about what to include in each paragraph? (on the google site page) ICQ: What should you do if you want help? (private message in zoom chat). - Ss write reviews. I will monitor slides progress, gives feedback, suggestions, help in the comment boxes I will monitor chat, keeps track of timing, gives time reminders (5mins and 1min). I will prep breakout rooms for peer checking activity When time is up, now you'll get a chance to read one of your peer's reviews.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Instructions: I will ask Ss Read their partner’s review, think about what enjoyed and use the list to give them feedback on the task. 4 mins. Make sure you take turns to talk. The idea is that inBORs, SS read the review of their partners, then they would have the opportunity to give feedback according with the sections (parts) of the film review. EG: I see that you gave all the required information and organised it well into 4 paragraphs. But I noticed you use some contractions which might make it too informal. And I think I found a an error here... ICQ: Which review will you read? (the review of the person in your breakout room) ICQ: Will you give feedback by writing or by speaking? (speaking) OCFB, I will nominate one student, says "Tell me about your peer's review, what was it about? "-T gives positive feedback about good language use, suggests some reformulation, corrections. also to vote on the most interesting.
