Description

Ss will be immersed in the use of functional language to articulate their ideas to write about writing invitations. With a focus on meaning, form, and pronunciation, students harness the potential of language using expressions that help them to clarify ideas.

Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of writing an invitation.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide deduction reading practice using a text about an invitation in the context of diplomatic requests
  • To provide clarification of language used for expressing invitations in formal situations.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show Ss some examples of formal and informal languages in paragraphs. Highlight in those paragraphs clue words. Ask Ss to diferenciate if they´re formal or informal.

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Show Ss an invitation. Ask Ss to figure it out if it is formal or informal. Ask Ss to find what the main idea is. Ask Ss for the context of the invitation. Highlight fixed parts on the invitation.

Useful Language (4-6 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Speak to Ss about meaning in an invitation. Show a checklist with the main points of information. Ask Ss to identify them. Cover meaning, form, and pronuntiation.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Give Ss a prompt of an invitation. Ask Ss to write an invitation according to the prompt. Use google docs to help Ss producing the invitation. Write Ss suggestions while they are working.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Provide Ss with a checklist so that they can read a peer´s invitation. Send Ss to breakout rooms. Ask Ss to give each other feedback after using the checklist
