Main Aims

  • To provide practice of used to in the context of actions that happened in the past many times.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of past habits
  • To analize meaning and form of used to in the context of past habits.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will ask Ss to participate in a brainstorming activity to discuss the next statement: "in the past.people did not live as long as they live today. Think two reasons why. I will provide my insight, and I will let them to give some ideas.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will provide an article with 4 paragraphs. Then, I will display two pictures, and Ss should associate each with one of the paragraphs. for this activity Ss will have 3 minutes. Then I will show the key answers.

Highlighting (6-8 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will display a slide showing what is the TL for the lesson, anf I will ask Ss to read the text again in order to look for examples were the target labguage is used. For this activity they will have 3 minutes, and as soon as they finish I will ask them to compare what they found. Then I will display a slide with the key answers.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will display a slide with an example of the TL. Then I will use some CCQs to elicit the meaning of it. Form: I will elicit the different parts of speech that are present in the structure, I will elicit how to create negative and interrogative sentences with the TL. Pronunciation: I will model the pronunciation, and I will drill it. Finally I will do students to repeat chorally.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will provide a google slides link, where Ss have to match options from column A with column B. Then, they have to create sentences using the TL "used to".. If there are more than three Ss, they will work in pairs in breakout rooms. If not they will work together in the main session.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will ask Ss to complete the following sentences I used to think that I used to be frightened of I used to / I didn`t use to like I used to play with I used to spend hours .... ing I never used to.... Then, i will put them in breakut rooms to share their answers.
