Main Aims

  • : To introduce and provide practice of writing a formal email to complain about something.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about complaints in the context of travel

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will display a picture about people complaining, and Iwill ask Ss to describe it. Trying to elicite that someone is complaining. Then, I will ask Ss to answer following question. Why do people complain? I will provide an example. and Iwill tell them to give their examples too.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

I will display a slide with my writing sample. Then I will ask Ss to answer following question 1. Did the tourist guide help them to fix the difficulty? Then, I will break down the structure in four different parts (opening, detail, requesting action, closing) I will display one slide for each in order to explain them thoroughly.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

I will send a link, where students have to match some functional language with the different parts of a Email of complaint. For this activity they will have 2 minutes, and they will be in pairs work. Then, I will clarify some useful functional language to be used in following activity

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

I will provide a google form link, where students will have to complete a formal Email of complaint choosing the apropriate language for each situation. For this activity Ss will have 3 minutes. Then, I will provide Ss a task where they have to write their own Email of complaint. You have had a problem with your next-door neighbour. You have not been able to speak to your neighbour about this. Write a letter to this neighbour. In your letter specify what is the complain about Explain the problem Suggest a solution Complimentary close 100 words.

Feedback and Error Correction (6-8 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

I will ask Ss to check their peers tasks and see if they get all the requirements from the checklist. finally, I will provide DEC.
