To teach writing in the context of traveling

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide product and process writing practice of a postcard in the context of travel

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification in the context of travel
  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about postcards in the context of travel

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To start engaging students to the lesson with an ice breaker

Students will be shown a series of different images that represent the topic of the lesson. They will be instructed to look at them and to try to guess what they will be talking about during the class. Once they have guessed the topic they will be sent to break out rooms to discuss some questions with their peers.

Language (3-5 minutes) • To contextualize students with the target language they will be learning

Students will be instructed to read a postcard and to pay attention to phrasal verbs that talk about the topic of traveling. They will be given three minutes to read and will be working in groups. Once they finish, they will come back to the classroom to share their answers.

Layout (3-5 minutes) • To let students identify the sections of a piece of writing

Students will be instructed to read the text again but this time they will have to identify the order of the layout (introduction, body, ending). They will be working individually and will be given 3 minutes to do the activity. After that they will share their answers with the whole class.

Clarification-Meaning (3-5 minutes) • To explain the meaning of phrasal verbs

Students will be instructed to match phrasal verbs with their correct definitions. They will be sent into break-out rooms to work in groups. Once they finished they will come back to obtain feedback and check their answers.

Clarification-form (3-5 minutes) • To explain the form of pharsal verbs

Students will be shown different structures of phrasal verbs and will be asked to place a sentence next to the one that reflects the correct form. They will be given 3 minutes and will be working individually.

Writing (10-15 minutes) • To let students practice writing

Students will be instructed to write a postcard with a maximum of 85 words, they will also have to implement some of the phrasal verbs seen during the lesson. For this activity, they will be shown an example so they can follow it and will be instructed to work individually. The time given for this task will be 10 minutes. Checklist: Students will be given a series of questions in order to review their classmate's writing exercises. For this activity, they will be sent into break our rooms and have 5 minutes to complete it.

Feedback and error correction (3-5 minutes) • To give time to students to clear doubts about the lesson

Students will be given time to ask questions and clear their doubts related to what they saw during the lesson. Corrections will also be made if necessary.
