Main Aims

  • To provide practice of language used for Refuse invitations.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a video about declining invitations
  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about Refuse invitations. Also, practice speaking and the use of TL.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. Start the lesson by engaging students in a discussion about social events and invitations. Ask questions like: Have you ever been invited to a party or event that you didn't want to attend? How did you respond to the invitation? Do you find it difficult to say no to invitations? 2. Conduct OCFB

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a video or situation

3. Play the YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujOihEgPAIU (approximately 2-3 minutes long) in which characters decline invitations. Explain the gist task: "Listen to the conversation and identify how the characters refuse the invitations. Pay attention to the language they use." Use ICQs Why are you watching the video? What do you have to pay attention to? Have students discuss their findings in pairs/groups. Conduct a brief class discussion to collect their observations and answers.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Show Ss the next text where they will notice the TL. Ask them if they observe some of the language used in the video. Sara: Hey, Sara! We're having a big party this Saturday. Are you coming? John: Oh, I appreciate the invite, but I can't make it this time. I have plans with my family. Sara: Aw, that's too bad. We were hoping to see you there. John: Thanks for understanding. Have a great time, though!

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Show Students the phrase: Oh, I appreciate the invite, but I can't make it this time. I have plans with my family. And ask them to explain the meaning, analyze the form with them using the whiteboard tool. Meaning: The conversation revolves around declining an invitation politely. Form: "I appreciate the invite..." Meaning: Expressing gratitude for the invitation. Form: Subject + Verb + Object. "I can't make it this time." Meaning: Politely declining the invitation. Form: Subject + Modal Verb + Negative Verb Phrase. "I have plans with my family." Meaning: Providing a reason for declining. Form: Subject + Verb Phrase + Prepositional Phrase. "Thanks for understanding." Meaning: Expressing gratitude for the understanding. Form: Expression of thanks + Verb. Pronunciation: Emphasize stress on keywords like "appreciate," "can't," "make it," "family," "thanks," and "understanding." Show how intonation can convey politeness. Appropriacy: This language is appropriate for declining social invitations politely.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Controlled Practice Activity: Sentence Completion Prepare a handout with the following sentence stems, leaving a blank for students to fill in with appropriate phrases for refusing invitations: "Thanks for inviting me to the _______________, but _______________." "I'd love to come to your _______________, but _______________." "I appreciate the offer to _______________, but _______________." "Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it to _______________ because _______________." "It sounds like a great _______________, but _______________." Instruct students to choose the most appropriate phrase or sentence continuation from their understanding of declining invitations politely. After completing the sentences, review and discuss their answers as a class to ensure correct usage and understanding. This controlled practice activity allows students to apply the language learned in a structured way before moving on to free practice.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

7. Role-play Activity (10 minutes) In pairs or small groups, have students participate in role-play activities where they take turns inviting and refusing invitations using the target language. Encourage students to create various scenarios such as declining a birthday party, a dinner invitation, or a movie night. 8. Conduct Feedback and DEC. Ask students to share their experiences and challenges during the role-play activity. Provide feedback on their language use and appropriacy. (If time permits) Encourage students to ask questions and clarify doubts. Summarize the main points of the lesson and highlight any areas that may require further practice.
