Main Aims

  • To be able to effectively talk about activities done in last summer holiday using past simple tense .

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of words about activities in the summer holiday.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

show students a picture of different activities that are usually done in the summer holiday . ask them "what is this picture about ?" " summer holiday ". i will tell them a sentence about myself ( last summer , I went to Alexanderia with my family and I really enjoyed the sea) draw a circle and write "summer holiday " in it. ask them" what did you do last summer holiday ?" write their answers . Ask them " Did you have fun ?"

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for using past simple to talk about activities done in the summer holiday

present a text about last holiday write a conversation between two classmates seeing each other after the summer holiday : Ali : What did you do last summer Hany ? Hany : I went to the beach with my family . Ali: That's look like fun .Where did you go ? Hany : We went to Sharm .I had a really good time .What about you Ali? Ali : We spent the summer with my cousin in the country .We played a lot of games together .It was fun . underline the past verbs and write them in different color .

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Elicit the target language by asking CCQs : Do they talk about last or next holiday ? last holiday . Did the verbs change ? yes write on the board two columns table " verb base - past form " elicit the changes in the verb " do - did " - " go - went " - have - had " - "play -played " - " is - was "

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning and form of the target language

Ask students to give examples about their vacations and write them on the board . underline the target language and write it on a different color to clarify the structure of past simple . add ed to regular verbs " play -played" " enjoy-enjoyed " . some verbs are irregular e.g " have - had " " is- was "

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

give the students multi-choice exercise about activities in the past . students work alone to answer the questions . set students in groups to check their answers elicit the correct answers as a classwork .

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

write the conversation between Ali and Hany on the board . Ali : What did you do last summer Hany ? Hany : I went to the beach with my family . Ali: That's look like fun .Where did you go ? Hany : We went to Sharm .I had a really good time .What about you Ali? Ali : We spent the summer with my cousin in the country .We played a lot of games together .It was fun . erase the past simple sentences and ask students to individually complete the sentences with sentences of their own in the past simple . set students in groups to compare their answers . ask some students about their group answers .

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

ask students to write a paragraph of five sentences about their last summer holiday . give them ten minutes to work individually . students compare their paragraphs in groups .
