Description

In this lesson, students learn to compare between things in the past and now , and describe the changes that happened to things and people using different vocabulary related to the "change". the lesson starts with an interesting pair discussion about amusing things they used to use when they were young. then the exposure stage when they are exposed to the target language, then controlled practice through "multiple choice" activity. then free practice through role-play speaking activity.

Main Aims

  • To provide students with new vocabulary which will help them to speak about the changes in their life freely and confidently.

Subsidiary Aims

  • speaking: to enable students to practice speaking by exchanging opinions, and telling silly stories from the past then comparing them to the present. This creates rapport engage students more in the learning process.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show students different pictures for things we used in the past and were favorable for us in this period. I will put them in 4 groups to discuss some ideas about those things and the change that happened to them. then I will let some of them reveal their opinions, and their partner's opinions.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

exposing students to the target language in a context (text). Show students flashcards with pictures of the target language. Ask ICQs to check the understanding.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

highlight the key words to elicit them, and to grab student's attention to them.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

clarify the elicited words: the meaning, the form and the pronunciation. Use CCQs to ensure that students understanding the meaning. Drill the spelling and pronunciation of the words. Then ask students to use the words in sentences.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ask students to fill the gaps with the correct adjective. ask ICQs ask them to check the answers with their partner. Provide an answer key on the board.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

prepare different types of questions written on flashcards. make students choose one question randomly and answer it, and if other students have further questions related to this one they can ask this person for clarification.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

ask every student to choose a person of their family who has changed in personality and appearance and discuss this change and how it happened over the years. every student should speak for at least 2 minutes. teacher monitor then gives feedback .
