Ss will be immersed in the use of functional language to articulate their ambitions and achievements. With a focus on meaning, form, and pronunciation, students harness the potential of language using expressions that help them to clarify ideas.

Main Aims

  • To practice and revise functional language to discuss ambitions and achievements.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about ambitions and achievements
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of achievements and ambitions

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show Ss three pictures related to money, success, and love. Let them think about what they think of them. Ask Ss the question: Would you like to have some of them in your life? Conduct OCFB

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Show some pictures to Ss. Tell Ss to listen to some people, and relate those people to each picture. Tell Ss to take notes relating the name and picture code. Let Ss share in pairs their answers. Show them the answer key.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Tell Ss to pay attention to the words dreams, achievements, and ambitions. Ask them what they think about them. Ask them to state the differences.

Clarification (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Introduce to Ss the expressions: I’ve always wanted to. It’s always been my dream to… One thing I’d also love to do is… I’d also like to… One thing I’ve done that I’m very proud of is… My greatest achievement was when I... Cover Meaning, Form, pronunciation, and Appropriacy while dragging those expressions into a chart divided by 3 columns the first one with a headline achievement, the second one with dream, and the last one with ambition.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Make Ss match sentences with the concept of achievement, dream, or ambition. 1. I’ve never been to Ireland and my ambition is to go back there and rediscover my family roots. 2. I’d say my greatest achievement was a sporting one. 3. I’ve always, always wanted to own a car but not just any old car. It has to be a red Ferrari. 4. My biggest ambition is one day to buy an enormous house which is in the middle of the countryside, in the mountains somewhere, but you know, really miles from anywhere. 5. My greatest achievement was actually to get in to university, where I’m studying medicine now. 6. Sarah's achievement in completing her first marathon was a testament to her dedication and perseverance, inspiring her friends and family to pursue their fitness goals with equal determination. 7. John's promotion to Vice President of Sales marked a significant achievement in his career, showcasing his exceptional leadership skills and strategic acumen to his colleagues and superiors. 8. Maya's lifelong dream is to travel the world, exploring diverse cultures, cuisines, and landscapes, and she's saving diligently to make that dream a reality. 9. Daniel's dream of becoming a renowned scientist has been nurtured since childhood, and he is now pursuing a Ph.D. in astrophysics to contribute to our understanding of the universe. 10. Emily's dream of opening a shelter for homeless animals reflects her deep compassion, and she's actively working on a business plan to turn her dream into a compassionate reality. Free Practice (8-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ask Ss to make a list of four or five ambitions, dreams, or achievements that they have in their lives. These could relate to the following things. Job/study. Places to visit. Things that they’d like to own. Money. Someone they’d like to meet/ have met. Something that they’d like to discover or invent. Marriage/children. A sporting dream/ achievement. Something they have learned/would like to learn. Ask them to share their answers and opinions about each other ideas. Put them to work in groups. Conduct feedback and DEC.
