Present Continuous ( Unit 10)

Description

In this lesson students will finish working on Unit 9 of the coursebook Headway 1, in which they are going to learn and practise vocabulary related to giving directions. Afterwards, Ss will start working on Unit 10 of the book, in which the first topic is the present continuous tense.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of of the present continuous tense in the context of daily life situations.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of words and expressions related to giving directions.
  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a dialogue using the present continuous.
  • To provide product writing practice of a sentences using the present continuous tense in the context of daily life situations.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (20-30 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

We´ll start the lesson with the Ss presenting their orals, for homework they had to find information about a megacity and present a small talk. Then we´ll work on page 73 ( the last page of Unit 9) in which we´ll work on vocabulary related to giving directions ( page 73: Ex 1, 2, 3 and 4) After that, we´ll start with Unit 10, we´ll watch the unit video and do the starter activity.

Exposure (10-12 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

In this stage of the lesson Ss we´ll work on page 74, Ex. 1, 2 and 3 in which the target language ( present continuous tense) will be exposed.

Task (10-12 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

In this stage of the lesson Ss will work on page 75, Ex. 4 and 5, and Practise 1, and 2. With these activities they´ll have a chance to practise the target language.

Report (10-12 minutes) • To allow students to report on how they did the task and how it went

We´ll check the activities as a class and I´ll give them feedback about what they did.

Language Analysis (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the task language

In this stage we´ll revise the grammar point, and I´ll clarify MPF using the grammar spot and grammar reference (page 137).

Language Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with practice of the task language

Ss will work on Ex. 3 and 4 of page 75 to practise using the target language in a speaking activity.
