present simple and present continuous
A1 level
Description
Main Aims
-
To provide clarification and practice of present simple and present continuous
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide review of present simple and present continuous
Procedure (45-60 minutes)
Begin with a quick brainstorming activity. Ask students to name actions or activities they do regularly. Write some of their responses on the board.
Discuss the concept of verb tenses and introduce the two tenses for today: Present Simple and Present Continuous. Explain that the Present Simple is used for routines and facts, while Present Continuous is used for actions happening now or in the near future.
1. Present Simple: Write an example sentence on the board: "I play basketball every Saturday." Explain that in the Present Simple tense, we use the base form of the verb for regular routines and general facts. Provide more examples and ask students to identify the tense: "She eats breakfast at 7 AM." "They live in New York." Highlight the use of time expressions (e.g., every day, always, usually) with this tense. 2. Present Continuous: Write an example sentence on the board: "I am playing basketball right now." Explain that in the Present Continuous tense, we use a form of "to be" (am, is, are) + the base form of the verb + "-ing" for actions happening at the moment. Provide more examples and ask students to identify the tense: "She is eating lunch at the moment." "They are watching a movie tonight." Discuss the use of "now," "at the moment," and "currently" with this tense.
Pair Work: Distribute handouts with exercises that include sentences in both Present Simple and Present Continuous. In pairs, have students identify the tense used in each sentence and then rewrite them in the other tense. Encourage them to use the appropriate time expressions. Class Discussion: Go over the answers as a class, providing explanations and feedback.
Role-Play Activity: Divide the class into pairs. Give each pair a scenario or situation (e.g., ordering food at a restaurant, planning a weekend trip). Have them create dialogues using both Present Simple and Present Continuous to discuss their scenarios.
Review: Summarize the key points about Present Simple and Present Continuous. Remind students when and how to use each tense. Homework: Assign homework exercises or writing prompts that require the use of Present Simple and Present Continuous.
