Reading Lesson
B1 level

Description

In this lesson, Ss practice reading for gist and detail in the context of a reading text titled "Get Happy- Give Your Money Away". The lesson starts with a lead-in and then a discussion about the definition of the title of the lesson. This is followed by skimming the text where Ss read for gist and tell the main idea of the text. Then Ss scan the text to answer the specific questions about the reading in the 1c section. As a post-reading activity, Ss come up with an idea of charity work in small groups and share their idea with the other group.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information reading practice using a text about charity and helping others in the context of "Get Happy- Give Your Money Away".

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of "previously, donation, charity, save money" in the context of charity and helping others.
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a post-reading activity in the context of charity work.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T tells Ss they are going to watch some videos. T opens the videos and asks about the main idea of what they have watched. T elicits answers and writes target vocabulary which she elicited from Ss and asks Ss whether they have done any charity work. (If they have done any charity work, T asks when and to whom)

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T makes sentences with "previously, donation, charity, save money" and elicits their meaning. After eliciting, T informs students about the form of each vocabulary and asks students to repeat the word after her to teach Ss the pronunciation of each word. Then, T asks Ss to log in to Wordwall to match the meanings with the words ("previously, donation, charity, save money"). T instructs Ss about timing. T asks ICQ. After Ss completes the task, T gives feedback.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T asks Ss to have a gist reading of the text. T gives 1 min for Ss for gist reading. T asks the following question: "What's the main idea of the text?". T highlights the title of the text and elicits the possible details that the text might include.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (16-18 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T gives Ss time Ss to read for the details and tells Ss to look at the questions in the 1c section of the book. T sets the instructions for this task and provides ICQ to make sure Ss understand the task.T ends the time and asks Ss to log in Mentimeter to answer the questions. T gives feedback for the answers.

Post-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T starts a class discussion by asking the following question: "Does the article make you feel differently about giving your money away? Why / Why not?". Then, T asks Ss to form two groups as a class and come up with an idea for charity work as a group. Ss will discuss what kind of charity work they can do and they will share their charity project with the whole class. The two groups will give feedback to each other.
