Main Aims

  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of asking for and giving directions in town

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The T is going to show a picture of a map and he will elicit from the SS places in town. Then, the T will show a different map and he will ask to SS questions similar to the following model: "Excuse me, is there a Bus Station near here?

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

The SS will listen to the audio CD3 37 from the Face 2 Face Student's book. Gist question: Which places do they want to go to? The SS will listen to the audio once again and they will find the places on the map choosing the correct number. This activity will be done in Google Forms.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

The SS look at the map once again and they will take turns to ask for and give directions. The T will drill: "Excuse me, is there a Café near here?

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

MEANING The SS will look at a map and they will choose the correct direction's description according to the question. The SS will pay attention to the grammatical structure used to give directions. Option 1: -Excuse me, where's the hospital? -It's on Morgan Road. Go along this road and go past the petrol station. The hospital is on your right. -Thanks a lot. Bye. Option 2: -Excuse me, where's a hospital? -It's at Morgan Road. Goes along this road and go along the petrol station. The hospital is in your right. -Thanks a lot. Bye. FORM The SS are going to complete a conversation about asking for and giving directions. The SS will use Google Forms to do this task. PRONUNCIATION The T will provide a sentence and the students will practice the correct intonation sorting stress patterns by putting the words into the correct columns. . . . . . Excuse me. Controlled Practice (5-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

In couples, the SS will read an email and find the places in bold on the map provided. They will fill in the gaps using the correct words. Hi Stephen Here are directions from the station to the flower shop where I work. Go along Station Road and _____ _____ . That's Gunn Street. Then turn left, _____ ______ a café and turn right ______ a supermarket. _____ ______ the bridge and turn left again. The flower shop is on your left, _____ _____ the bank. See you tomorrow! Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In couples, the SS will look at the map and they will move a virtual character around town. They will ask for and give directions how to get to a place. The SS will take turns.
