By the end of this lesson, students will have practised their speaking skills by asking and answering questions about the reading text and sharing their opinions in the context of air and space travel
Procedure (40-50 minutes)
- Show Ss the pictures of Sabiha Gökçen, the world's first female fighter pilot. Elicit name and dates. - To set the context of important dates in the past, ask Ss when she lived. - Ask Ss to work in pairs and come up with words they know about the subject. - Elicit words Ss know and write relevant words on the board. If Ss do not come up with the words themselves, write "plane," "flight," "pioneer," "travel," on the board.
-Tell Ss they are going to look at some new words that are in the reading text. Give Ss HO 1 (vocabulary) and ask Ss to work in pairs and match the words and definitions. - Monitor. - Give Ss the answer key. -Drill pronunciation and elicit stress and part of speech. - Check Ss' understanding of the vocabulary items by asking CCQs.
-Re-groups Ss in new pairs. -Show pictures of Apollo 11 and the plane used during the first air journey. -Ask Ss what the pictures are about. (The first flight and the first man on the moon) - Tell Ss that they will read a text on the first air travel and the first space journey to the moon. - Tell Ss they will get small pieces of paper with paragraphs of a text and ask them to put them in the correct order. Tell them to read quickly and that they only have 1,5 minutes to complete the activity. - Monitor. -Ask Ss to check their order in pairs. -Give them the complete text. HO2 - Ask Ss to look at the complete text and tell them to match the headings with the paragraphs. Tell Ss they have 1 minute to do this activity. - Elicit the answers from the Ss and have WC FB. -
- Tell Ss they will answer questions about the reading text. SS will work in pairs: Student A and Student B. -Student A has questions for text 1909, and student B has questions for text 1969. Individually, they read the text in detail and answer the comprehension questions. -Give Ss HO3. Tell Ss they have 3 minutes. -Tell Ss to go out of the classroom and find the answerkeys on the walls and get it. - Ss compare their answers to the answer key
-Tell Ss they are going to answer more questions about the text. -Show HO4 and tell them to look at the questions in part a) and fold the rest of the HO. -Ss write their answers on the HO. .- Monitor. Give the answer key to the questions and ask them to compare their answers to the key. -Tell Ss to unfold their HO. Tell Student A's that they are going to interview Student B who is Neil Armstrong. Student A will ask the questions in part b). -When Student A and B finish the interview, tell Student B's they are going to interview Student A who is Louis Blériot. Tell Student B's to ask the questions in part c). -Monitor and takes notes for delayed FB at the end of the speaking activities. -Re-group Ss. -Next, tell Ss they are going to share their ideas on air and space travel. -Show HO5. Tell Ss they will discuss the topics on the HO or they can talk about their own ideas. -Elicit ideas for how to discuss a topic, how to express our ideas. Give examples by writing "I think" and "In my opinion" on the board. -Drill the phrases. -Give HO and ask Ss to discuss their ideas or share opinions, They have 5 minutes. -When Ss finish discussing, ask them to form a group with another pair and share their ideas. -Monitor. -WC FB
