Megacities ( Reading and Listening Lesson)
Elementary ( A2) level

Description

This lesson will be delivered on Wednesday 27th September. Teacher: Trini Students: Yesenia, Ximena, Daniela Yellowstone Language Center In this lesson Ss will have the opportunity to practise their reading and listening skills in the context of megacities.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed practise of reading and listening skills in the context of megacities

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of of comparative and superlative forms in the context of megacities.
  • To introduce vocabulary related to city and small towns, and give Ss some opportunities to practise it.
  • To provide Ss with opportunies to practise their speaking skills in the context of megacities.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I´ll ask Ss if they know the meaning of megacities, and of they say yes I´ll ask them whether they can provide any examples. Then we´ll watch a short youtube video about megacities.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

To prepare Ss for the activities we´ll do Ex. 1 and 2 on page 70 ( Ss will make predictions about what the text information is)

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

I´ll set Ex. 3 and give Ss time to work on it individually. Then they´ll do Ex. 4 in which they´ll share their ideas with the class about the different megacities.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

In this moment of the lesson, Ss will work on Ex. 5 ( Listening for details), they´ll do it individualy and then we´ll correct as a class. The project will be set for homework for next Monday ( They´ll have to do research about a different megacity and prepare a presentation for the class)

Post-Reading/Listening (15-20 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I´ll ask Ss to discuss these questions as a group: - If you had the opportunity to travel to one of the 3 cities we read about, which one would you choose to go? Why? - What would you like to do there? Afterwards, if we still haave time we´ll move on to page 72 ( Vocabulary and Speaking about A city and a small town). We´ll work on Ex. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.
