By the end of this lesson, students will be able to use "should," "shouldn't," "must," and "mustn't" to give advice and express necessity, primarily focusing on speaking.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To improve students' reading skills by using these modal verbs in context.
Procedure (45-55 minutes)
Show pictures or props related to weekend activities. Ask students to describe what they see in the pictures using simple sentences.
Introduce the modal verbs: "should," "shouldn't," "must," and "mustn't. Write them on the board and briefly explain their meanings in simple terms. Provide basic examples using these modal verbs.
Present students with sentences that use the modal verbs in basic forms. Practice forming sentences with the class. For example: "You should eat vegetables," or "You mustn't be late for school."
Divide the class into pairs or small groups. Give each group a set of picture cards depicting different weekend activities. Students take turns giving advice to each other using the modal verbs in simple sentences. For example: "You should do your homework," or "You mustn't watch TV all day." Encourage them to use complete sentences. Monitor and provide assistance as needed.
Provide feedback on students' speaking and reading skills. Correct any basic errors in modal verb usage gently.
