Description

A lesson on writing skills focused on the organization and style of postcards.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of writing a postcard or general messages for keeping in touch.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To review and practice common postcard phrases and vocabulary.
  • To clarify the use of ellipsis in informal writing.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will display images of various ways of communicating Email, Texting, Postcard, and Letter. I will ask the students the following Why is it important to keep in touch? What is your favorite method of communicating? Which method of communicating do you think is the most personal? Have them discuss in breakout groups.

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

I will show students a sample of a letter. (A letter from a friend in Japan) Using powerpoint I will have students identify the sections of the letter. 1. Greetings and/or update 2. More news 3. Closing and/or connection I will discuss any questions regarding the text.

Useful Language (12-14 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Present the common postcard phrases to the students. Explain fill in the blank activity to students. Have students work on activity for 2-3 minutes. I will briefly introduce ellipsis in writing. I will point out examples using or potential uses of ellipsis in the letter written by my friend. Point out the use of ellipsis in the questions from the previous activity. Engage students in a brief discussion: "Why did the writer skip certain words?" to highlight the informal nature of postcards.

Productive Task(s) (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

I will tell students to think of a place they've been to or want to visit. Have students write a postcard to a friend and remind them of the guidelines. 1. Begin with a greeting or general update 2. Share a specific piece of news or information 3. Close the message with a connection or farewell. Remind students to consider using some of the phrases we have learned and ellipsis in their writing. They will write the postcard on the powerpoint itself Provide them with a template on Google Slides or Docs to write their postcard, sticking to the discussed structure. Remind them to use the phrases and the concept of ellipsis where applicable.

Feedback and Error Correction (6-8 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

I will provide a checklist for students and have them read their partner's postcard. Afterward I will have each student go over the checklist identifying where they found each part of the checklist in their partner's paper. I will correct students if needed. Delayed error correction. Ask students if they have any questions.
