Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of Past Simple in the context of Holiday

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a Conversation in the context of Holiday

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I am going to show some pictures of mine about how I spent my last weekend. And I want my students to guess whether I enjoyed it or not.

Exposure (4-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

In this stage I am going to ask my students about how they spent their weekend.

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I am going to write some of the sentences that my students made on the board in the past simple positive and negative form to draw their attention to this tense.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will clarify the use of past simple tense by drawing a timeline on the board and asking some CCQs from my students. (Is the sentence about the past, present or future? Past. Is it finished? Yes. Can I mention the exact time? Yes.) I will elicit the structure of the sentence by asking about the rolls of the words in the sentence. I will work on the regular and irregular verbs as well. I am going to work on the sentence stress at the end.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will have 5 minutes to answer the question on page 127 individually. They will have 2 minutes to check their answers in pairs and then we are going to check the answers with the whole class.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will ask my students to talk about the best holiday that they have had in groups of 3. They will have 10 minutes to share their experience. I am going to monitor my students during this time and the feed back will be given at the end if needed.
