Reading Lesson: Body talk and gestures
intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students talk to their partners and come up with common body/hand gestures in our culture and guess the meaning of the pictures shown in their books/board. As they go on to the reading, they first get the gist of it and they underline words and idioms that they do not know about. Then, they scan through the reading and the new words and expressions are explained and practiced. overall, the general steps are --> reading warm-up > skimming> scanning > summarizing > inference

Pre-Reading (2-4 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

now give them the title of the reading and tell them to predict what exactly it will be about, maybe asking them some questions relevant to the topic. teach them some useful vocab if there's any.

While-Reading #1 (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

instruct Ss to skim the passage and then say the gist of it (summary). (play the recording for them once to get a little familiar with pronunciations) ask them to read it carefully by themselves (scan it) and highlight any words or expressions which they don't know.

While-Reading #2 (6-7 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

ask them to read aloud one by one and first try to guess the meaning of the unknown words by using the context and help them along the way, explain the expressions completely to them.

Post-Reading (4-6 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

provide them with check boxes relevant to the reading. elicit discussion/homework about a hand gesture they've seen that has surprised them or in which they were unfamiliar with them.
