Description

In this session, students will be able to talk about some family members using family-related vocabulary and the sentence construction "I have got". The lesson begins with some students doing a puzzle on the board, when finished, the puzzle features a family image, which will be used to review the family vocabulary learned in previous lessons. This is followed by a short video that provides context for the target structure and vocabulary. Then there are some controlled and semi-controlled activities, and finally some students talk about their family members with the help of family photos.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of I have got in the context of famiy.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Two or three students from each team come to the board to do two puzzles, which when completed will reveal two family images. The team that finishes the puzzle first gets points. Students are asked some questions to review family vocabulary learned in earlier lessons.

Exposure (3 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students watch a short video about children talking about their family members.

Highlighting (1-2 minutes) • Highlighting To draw students' attention to the target language

The teacher asks a student to read some sentences from the video shown in the previous stage, and to find the structure "I have got", learned in the previous lesson.

Clarification To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language (1-2 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

The teacher reviews the pronunciation of the structure "I have got". Students practice some choral repetition.

Controlled Practice (5-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The teacher hangs some family members flash cards on the board and writes the model sentence "I have got...". Students play "Find the cheese" in teams (boys vs. girls). There are some pictures of doors under the flashcards, and behind the doors students can find a picture of a cat, (which does not give points to their team) or a picture of cheese (that gives three points). Students will choose the family member above the door they want to open and make the sentence using the model "I have got...".

Semi-Controlled Practice (13-15 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Activity 1: Three students from each team (Team Boys/ Team Girls) come to the front of the class, a family member flash card will be on a desk in front each of them, students can select the card they like. The teacher names one of the cards and the student in front of that card will use the model "I have got", to say their sentence for example: I have got a grandma. Each card has an upside-down cup in front of it, after students say their sentences they check the cups for stickers (points). Activity 2: All students are given pictures of the target vocabulary, for this activity they will stand up. The teacher calls out a card and all the students that have the named card say the sentence and take a seat. The activity ends, once all students have sat down.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

As the final exercise, students will use the vocabulary and model reviewed during the lesson to talk about their own family, using family photos previously sent by the parents.
