Main Aims

  • The aim of this lesson is to use the second conditional if to express an imaginary situation in the context of future society.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide a fluency speaking practice in the context of what would you do.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1- Greet the students. 2- Present a PPT named "As you like it" in order to introduce the idea of" what would you if you were rich?" 3-The ppt is about different pictures : a big house,an expensive car,a trip around the world and buying expensive clothes. 4-Ask the students what would you do if you were rich? 5- I will ask them to tell one other about what would they do if they were rich.

Pre- teach (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

-Introduce the difficult words in the reading: 1-Income(N) Display a picture and ask the students what they see in this picture. Is he taking or giving money? When do we usually get money? Model and drill. write it on the board and highlight the main stress /ˈɪŋkʌm/. 2-Drive-drink(v) Display a picture and ask the students what they get from the picture. what is the name of this act? Model and drill. Write it on the board. CCQs: 1- Is income the money you earn or the money you spend? 2- Can income come from different sources? 3- Is income the same for every person? 4- is drink-driving legal or illegal? 5-What happens if someone drink-drives?

Reading Task (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

-Introduce the text. -Provide the students with the reading text( HO#1) - Ask the students to read it thoroughly. - Divide them into two groups in order to discuss together after reading what would be different in Egypt then share it all together.

Language Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-Highlight the use of would in the reading passage - Introduce the following sentence : -If I were you, I would buy a yacht. - Clarify the meaning of would in the sentence using CCQs: 1- Is the sentence about past, present or future? 2-Is this a real or imaginary situation? - This means that the speaker is imagining what it would be like to be the other person. -Pronunciation: -Mark on the board the word stressed in the sentence. - Model and drill. -Form: -Write the form on the board. If I were you, I would buy a yacht. If + sub + past tense = would + the bare inf. - Introduce the negative form of would/ wouldn't and shortened to 'd, especially in spoken English. - I will also clarify that they can use could and might. Example: They might be angry if I didn't visit them ( perhaps) If it stopped raining, we could go out.(We would be able to go out)

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

-Introduce Exercise 1 - Provide the students with HO#2 and demo. - Ask the students to answer individually then check their answers in pairs. Monitor to check if they need help. - Provide feedback on the board.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-Introduce Exercise 2. - Provide HO#3 and divide the students into two groups.to drop out of college - Check that they understand the questions in Never, Say never, under what circumstances, to lie to someone, to walk out of your job, to give someone a lift, to hit someone. -Circulate and make a note of any useful language and errors for analysis and correction later.
