Procedure (37-47 minutes)
Greet the students. Set the context for the lesson (expressing interest). State the aim and objectives of the lesson. Briefly explain the importance of expressing interest in conversations.
Show a short video clip or play an audio recording where someone expresses interest effectively. Ask students to share their initial observations about the clip. Discuss as a class what made the speaker's expression of interest effective. Present and explain common vocabulary and phrases related to expressing interest, such as "That's interesting," "Tell me more," "I'm curious about," etc. Write these phrases on the whiteboard and provide examples of how to use them. Encourage students to ask questions about the vocabulary.
Divide the class into small groups (3-4 students per group). Give each group a discussion topic related to expressing interest (e.g., "Discuss a time when someone showed genuine interest in your hobbies"). In their groups, students should engage in a discussion using the expressions learned earlier. Circulate among groups to observe and offer assistance.
Provide students with handouts containing conversation prompts. In pairs, students take turns practicing conversations using the provided prompts. Emphasize the use of the newly learned expressions of interest. Monitor and provide feedback as needed. Class Discussion (5 minutes): Bring the class back together and invite each group to share their discussion highlights. Encourage the use of expressions of interest during these discussions. Facilitate a brief class discussion about the importance of showing genuine interest in conversations. Wrap-up and Homework (3 minutes): Summarize the key points covered in the lesson. Assign homework, which may involve writing a short paragraph about a recent conversation where they used expressions of interest. Remind students to review the vocabulary and phrases.
Thank the students for their participation. Encourage them to practice expressing interest in their daily conversations. Mention the topic of the next lesson for continuity. (Monitoring, open-class feedback)
