Description

This is a Present, Practice, Production lesson of 45 minutes to present and practice the Present Simple tense and Frequency Phrases in the context of sports people.

Main Aims

  • To present and practice the Present Simple tense and Frequency Phrases in the context of Sports People.
  • By the end of the lesson, students will have practiced the Present Simple and Frequency Phrases in the context of Sports People.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide opportunities for learners to practice their speaking skills in the context of the lesson
  • Personal Aims (as a teacher): To slow down my speach and flow through the lesson, to use less complicated language and to limit the elements of teaching to only those required in the context of the lesson in order to keep good time.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5 minutes) • To set lesson context, engage students and build some enthusiasm.

1. Make a brief introduction and try to brielfy engage with one or two students. 2. Show photos of Yu-na Kim and Michael Phelps (names hidden), two sports people. 3. Ask as a group if the students know who they are. 4. Try to guague from facial responses if anybody knows. 5. Ellicit 2 or 3 comments by directly asking students by name. 6. Reveal photo with names exposed.

Presentation (10-15 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

1. Present Task 1 to the students. 2. Setup break-out rooms while they have a brief look. 3. ICQ - directly ask a student "what do you have to do?" 3. Move them into breakout rooms for 3 minutes. 4. Monitor rooms for understanding of task. 5. Present answer key and ascertain if any were wrong. 6. Present Task 2 to the strudents. 7. ICQ - ask a few questions to check understanding of tasks. 8. Put into breakout rooms for 5 minutes (switch off cam/mic). 9. CCQ Q.1 10. Launch whiteboard and elicit form Q.2. breaking down sentences 11. Ask for choral and individual repetition of: often, usually, always, ocassionally.

Practice (10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

1. Present Task 3 to the students 2. ICQ - Choose one of the questions as an example and have one of the Ss try it. 3. Allow a few minutes for them to complete the task individually. 4. Monitor the facial expressions to ensure understanding. 5. Put them in breakout rooms for a few minutes to compare answers. 6. Check answers in open class.

Production (10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language in real-world setting

1. Present Task 4. 2. ICQ - Explain the example and guague understanding. 3. Reinforce the idea by completing one for myself out loud. 4. Allow the Ss a minute to complete the task. 5. Put them into breakout rooms to compare answers with a partner. 6. Listen to and check the answers in open class. 7. If time allows, add a few exras in the form of free practice.
